Can the violinist play along with our DJ?

Your DJ keeps the dance floor going. The violin jumps in live on top for the songs that should feel bigger.

Short answer

Yes. At the reception, Jared plays live violin over your DJ's set: he pops in for big moments, steps back out, and comes back when the energy needs a lift. In his words, it's “not super common, but it can be super fun when I do it.”

How violin and DJ work together

  1. The DJ runs the night. Your DJ handles the playlist and the flow. By default, Jared is out on the dance floor with the wireless violin.
  2. Pop in, pop out. As Jared describes it, “I just kind of pop in and out... come back when the energy is lacking.” He takes breaks as needed while the DJ keeps the music going.
  3. Save some for late. Jared's tip: toward the end of the night, keep the violin on for longer.
  4. Sound either way. Jared brings his own equipment and doesn't rely on what the DJ brings. To run the violin through the DJ's system instead, he needs a power outlet and an XLR input into the DJ's board.

Planning it with your DJ

Once your contract is signed, Jared coordinates with your other vendors, including your DJ. You pick the songs you want the violin on in your BookLive client portal, the same place you choose ceremony and cocktail hour music.

Dance-floor songs on the song list include Uptown Funk (Bruno Mars), Levitating (Dua Lipa), I Gotta Feeling (The Black Eyed Peas), Don't Stop Believing (Journey) and Pink Pony Club (Chappell Roan). Because the violin has no words, songs with explicit lyrics are fine too. As Jared puts it, “nobody knows except the ones who know the lyrics.”

On your Zoom planning call, you and Jared go over the reception songs you want violin on, and on the day he arrives about an hour before he starts playing to set up and sound-check.

Your DJ often handles ceremony microphones as well, and Jared has his own as a backup. Who provides the officiant's microphone.

Violin and DJ questions

Do most couples add the reception?

Most couples book the ceremony and cocktail hour. Adding the reception with a DJ is less common, but it can be a lot of fun.

Do you have to use the DJ's speakers?

No. Jared brings his own sound. If you'd rather run the violin through the DJ's system, he needs a power outlet and an XLR input into their board.

Do you take breaks?

Yes, as needed. Your DJ keeps the music going while the violin steps out.

Will you talk to our DJ before the wedding?

Yes. Once your contract is signed, Jared coordinates with all your other vendors, including the DJ.
